Hand Hygiene
In the United States, hospital patients contract nearly 2 million infections each year, or about 1 infection for every 20 patients. These infections that patients acquire in the hospital can be life-threatening and difficult to treat. Hand hygiene is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of infections.
Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others especially at home. Many infections are spread by not washing hands with soap and clean, running water. If clean, running water is not accessible, use soap and available water. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands. It is essential that care givers and clients adhere to hand hygiene to promote health and wellness and prevent sickness and the spread of diseases.
